REFLECTIONS
Starting on this project showed me that not everything comes naturally to everyone. The first thing that I did was looking around the software to see what I had access to. Looking around the software it was obvious that I was in a little over my head, as I had not heard of half of the things that I saw. I started with a basic piano to get the feel for the note structure on the keyboard. Learning the structure of sound is critical to understand how to layer it together in a song.
The keyboard felt different in a way. Learning how to shift octaves mid recording was difficult, but I feel like I got it down to be usable. While it is no way near perfect, I like how everything sounds right now. Adding the base line was fun for me as that has been the thing that I feel like I know how to time the most.
The bass line is great. For this first song, I am going for something basic that is just combining some of the basic instruments. I feel as if this is going good and I really do like the synths that I have. Some of them are too aggressive for what I am looking for, but the ones that I am using are kind of trippy sounding, at least to me.
First song is done and I am happy with it at least for now. I think I’m going to try and do something different for this next one and have lyrics attached to them. If I can get my friend to sing on the track then I think I will.
Well, my friend said yes so I guess I’m writing lyrics now. At first I thought that the lyrics would be easy to write, but it is difficult, so mad props to those that do write them consistently. I like the message that I am going for with them, but at the same time I don’t.
Ok so the lyrics are done now and I can start making the music for them. I’m going for a different style of electronic that I feel will work the best for this. I’m going to do a basic four on the floor sound and then have a hard bass line in it as well. As for where in the song the hard bass will be, I’m not sure at this moment.
So that song is done outside of adding the vocals to it. I like the flow of it but I think it is missing something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Lyrics have been sung and are now on the track so who knows; maybe this will end up being my favorite one that I make. Right now it is by far just because of the hard bass in the track. Time to start on the next one...
Songs three, four, and five all followed the same creation technique just modified slightly for each one. Each of these tracks is house inspired so just say boots and cats to your self over and over again and that’s basically what I was going for sound wise. I feel as if I did hit this with one of them, but when I was messing around and put the next one together it was close but not quite there. I’m not sure why it isn’t there, but it just feels slightly off of what I was going for. Oh well, I like how it sounds so that’s good enough for me. The fifth track, that was different than the others I feel sounds the best together, but the tempo change in it was awkward. Anyways, these tracks were fun to make, but at the same time kind of simple, but that could just be because I don’t know how to layer effects on the tracks at this time.
Starting another track now, and it seems to be very well put together so far. I found some strings and drums that go together pretty well so I’m putting the bpm up pretty high for it. It sounds cool so I think I’m going to keep it.
This track was so much more fun to make than I thought I would be. I ended up putting some more synths in it and it seems like that really helped out the vibe overall.
Now that that last track is done with the strings, I honestly cannot believe how cool it came out. Finding all of these instruments was the coolest thing. Being able to make them all sound good together was really cool. For this next track I’m going to make it short and to the point.
Well, short and to the point was exactly what that was. It really isn’t that long of a track but all of the effects on it made it sound super cool to me at least. Its aggressive, which I like, and it also sounds almost industrial in a way. I love how this came together and I want to make more like this.
Starting my last track is kind of bitter sweat. I’ve loved making music for this project and do want to continue making some in the future. Out of everything I’ve done, I feel as if this track will combine everything into one. I guess we’ll see...
So last track is done, I’m happy with it, but not ecstatic. Anyways I need to learn how to mix like a dj at a music festival now so I can show how all of this flows together. Here we go…
So mixing isn’t the hardest thing to do, at least when you have a sync button, but it is exhausting. Trying to have the right timing for each and every transition is a nightmare. I’ve recorded my mix of all of my songs and think I did all right for a beginner. Now to upload everything to Sound Cloud and a few other sites liked on my ePortfolio.
